FAVOURITE DUTCH DEMO'S: STRIP THE THREADS

One of these demo's that blew me away!
Strip the Threads were a Straight Edge Youth Crew band in the vein of Mouthpiece and Chain of Strength from the Netherlands.
They existed around 2000 for a short period and released a demo tape which is pretty hard to find nowadays.

Members from Strip The Threads played and play in Reaching Forward, Know Your Enemy, Downslide, Justice, Rise and Fall, Modern Life is War and some others I guess.

They are sort of back together in a different line up recording a 7" for Not Just Words Records (order it at www.njwrecords.com)

DRIVEN

Again a Dutch band that was released on the famous Goodlife label, they sounded a lot like their labelmates back then.

Driven was a Vegan Straight Edge band from Amsterdam and well knows for their militancy.

They released a mcd/lp on Goodlife and a cd-r with 2 songs which are pretty rare I guess...well enjoy!

(THE DUTCH) REVEAL

Reveal was this awesome Dutch new school band in the mid 90's who released 3 records, their first one "Dissection of Thought" on goodlife is a classic I guess...after that they released another record on Goodlife and 1 record on Genet records before they went on a Hiatus.

Saw them a couple of times, the first time was in Tienray in the south of holland with Reaching forward, Mark of the Devil and some other I guess, the amazed me back then...cool that their records still stand strong and don't sound outdated.

here a short docu (in Dutch) and their records:

CLOSURE - Discography

I never been that of a screamo fan bit this record is still one of my favourite records of all time, I'm talking about the full length by this (American?) screamo band in the mid 90's...I fell in love directly with this record due it's great lay out and beautiful packaging.

The Music on it is a very intense form of screamo with some emo influences...just check it out yourself...

I got the LP (which is out of print and expensive on Ebay), the split with Breakwater and one song on the "I Can't Live Withou It" compilation.

One of the best gigs I saw in 2008...when I came home after this gig, I found out that it was on fabchannel...so I ripped the Audio from a streaming website and cut it to pieces and tagged the songs...great quality by the way...check out the sort of intermezzo in Upward over the Mountain...SO GOOD

PER KORO RECORDS: LOXIRAN

Back in 1998 I guess I was at this show with Mallorn, Reveal, Mark of the Devil and some others in the South of Holland and I remember talking to Ralf from the Once So Close distro and he advised me to buy the Loxiran 7".

Years later this 7" is still one of my favourite German new school 7"es and even one of my favourite Per Koro releases, a label which I really loved.

I guess they existed from 1996-1998 and released a killer 7" and an okay 10" which were released as a discography record together I guess.

check both records out!

FAVOURITE DUTCH DEMO'S: Blood X Red

First off in the catagory Favourite Dutch Demo's is the Bloodred demotape...for me the best demo ever made in Holland.

Bloodred were a Straight Edge band from Brabant and played some shows till some members dropped the edge and the band fell apart.

Bloodred sounded like this mix between Judge and Chorus of Dissaproval....members are now playing in State of Mind and Room13.

Mallorn - Demo tape + Newborn cd

Yo, it has been a while since I wrote here, well hopefully I will start writing on weekly base again.

The other new thing is that my blog will be a little different in the future and will be personal in an other way than before.

My goal is to write weekly and upload some music that has been an important part of my life or just music that I love and is hard to find!

The kick-off is by this Dutch band Mallorn....

Mallorn was an emo/screamo band in the early 90s and released a demotape and a mcd. They came from Horst in the south of Holland and played several shows, this was one of these bands that got me into hardcore and this band contained people who introduced me to several new bands and hardcore in general.

The demo-tape contained Johan on vocals (who now plays guitar in Union Town), Loek on bass (plays in Inhume and was in Insult), Aran on guitar (who was in Insult, Fold and plays now as a singer songwriter) and Nabbe the Bastard on drums (was in Insult and plays now in Blind to Faith) and had this more emo twist.

the mcd called "Newborn" contained Nabbe the Bastard on vocals, Willem-jan on bass (was in Insult and now in Eye of Judgement), Aran on guitar and Bjorn on drums.

"Hope There's Someone"

Last night I went to see Antony and the Johnsons in Antwerp, Belgium.
I went there with my best friend Cat and her boyfriend Daniel (Wouter couldn't go, SUCKER hehe).
We entered the building and noticed that it was sold out, no suprise because he sold out 3 nights in Holland against doorprices starting with 80 euros.

Inside we took our seat and watched a female dancer who would perform before Antony would hit the stage.
A lot of drugs was needed to enjoy it I guess because I couldn't understand it while I was sober.

After 20 minutes Antony and the Johnsons hit the stage, A tranvestite who produces some of hte most intense and beautifull music I have ever heard! He started of with a song from his new record which was a nice opener, the second song was "for today I am a boy" and goosebumps were revealing over my whole body, strange because at the same time Cat was saying to me that she had goosebumps over her whole body during that song! INTENSE!

The hightlight of the entire show which lasted more than 1,5 hour was "Fistfull of Love" which builds up from a really tiny ballad towards a big and soulfull ending which I totally loved!

After 1,5 hour she left the stage and came back to play one of my favourite songs ever: "Hope There's Someone" which was a few years ago the first song I've ever heard by Antony and which totally grab me emotionally through it's lyrics and music...
I guess I've posted this song before but I do it again with some lyrics...hope it does that much to you as it does to me:
check it out at 0.42! That's how moving music can be!

Hope there's someone
Who'll take care of me
When I die, will I go

Hope there's someone
Who'll set my heart free
Nice to hold when I'm tired

There's a ghost on the horizon
When I go to bed
How can I fall asleep at night

How will I rest my head
Oh I'm scared of the middle place
Between light and nowhere
I don't want to be the one
Left in there, left in there

There's a man on the horizon
Wish that I'd go to bed
If I fall to his feet tonight
Will allow rest my head

So here's hoping I will not drown
Or paralyze in light
And godsend I don't want to go
To the seal's watershed

Hope there's someone
Who'll take care of me
When I die, Will I go

Hope there's someone
Who'll set my heart free
Nice to hold when I'm tired

DIGGING THE GRAVE

HOLY SHIT BEST NEWS IN AGES

Faith No More to Reunite for European Tour
Plus: Mike Patton Scores Crank 2

Years before Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails took scuzzed-out sonics and transgressive imagery to the mall-rock mainstream, the Bay Area funk-metal spazzes in Faith No More violated every form of conventional wisdom and wound up playing bigger venues than anyone could've predicted. Back in the late 1980s, Faith No More brought new-wave synth-sheen, skronky jazz textures, and awkward white-guy rapping to a profoundly regressive heavy-rock scene. An entire generation of kids fondly remembers being freaked the fuck out by the flopping fish and the exploding piano at the end of the "Epic" video. FNM's 1989 album The Real Thing, the LP that pushed the band's poppiest tendencies to new extremes without compromising their weirdness, basically blew my mind when I was 10, and it's still an all-time favorite. And in 1992, the band opened Guns N' Roses and Metallica's mammoth co-headlining stadium tour, which means they're the first band I ever saw live. The image of all those fists pumping in unison to "Epic" is one I still carry with me.

FNM broke up 11 years ago, and I've never held out much help for a reunion, mostly because frontman Mike Patton has had such success making god-awful unlistenable weirdo blorp-jazz. But according to a Tripwire report, Faith No More will reunite for a summer European tour. So far, details are scarce. The band hasn't announced any dates yet, and Patton isn't giving any interviews on the subject. The band will hit the road with what was their final lineup: Patton, keyboardist/Imperial Teen frontman Roddy Bottum, slap-bassist Billy Gould, drummer Mike Bordin, and guitarist Jon Hudson. The band has no plans for any American shows right now. There's also no word on any involvement from classic-era guitarist Jim Martin (he of the frizzy hair and Sally Jessy Raphael glasses), who may be too busy growing giant pumpkins to take part. Also no word on original vocalist Chuck Mosely, the guy who sang on "We Care a Lot" and who Patton replaced just in time for The Real Thing.

Real talk: This is awesome news. Patton's latter-day downtown noise-freak persona has been unbearable, and FNM was a huge influence on the late-90s tsunami of shitty rap-metal bands, so Faith No More never get their due when people talk about the early-90s alt-rock revolution. But this was a great band, and these reunion shows will almost certainly be a whole lot of fun.

In other Patton news, he's just scored his first movie. And what a movie! Crank 2: High Voltage, which opens on April 17, is the sequel to the frantic and hilarious 2006 stoner classic where Jason Statam has to keep his adrenaline up or he'll die. Patton's involvement in this is probably the logical conclusion of the man's longtime film-music fixation. Patton's scored a few video games, and he also did the voices for the screaming vampire zombies in I Am Legend. His Ipecac label has given deluxe reissues to Ennio Morricone scores. And The Director's Cut, the 2001 album from Patton's Fantomas project, turned iconic film-scores into scary metal, and it probably still ranks as the best thing Patton's done since Faith No More broke up. So I'm guardedly optimistic that Patton will know exactly how to soundtrack Jason Statham shooting cocaine into his eyeball or whatever.

I remember after a hard week of work when i was like 13 years old I ran towards the local cd shop to buy "King for a Day" by Faith no More, which was just released.

AMAZING that I will finally see them live!

bye bye Horst hi Utrecht

Last saturday I had my last day at my job at the Texaco gasstation, weird that after 8,5 years I am going to leave over there, and can stay all week in Utrecht. I love the fact that I can stay in Utrecht and don't have to travel late anymore on the friday, I kinda hated that! Obviously things are going to change a bit, I am gonna see my parents, brothers and friends over there less than before, but so it goes.

Here I am sitting, finally working on my blog again and listening to the "Low" record by David Bowie which is kinda weird but I like it, I know Toni Crack is a huge fan of this record.

Hopefully Somebody will go out this thursday here in Utrecht, I am in for some party.
Upcoming weekend will be a blast in the beautifull city called: Nijmegen, friday a houseparty at Afke/Kenny's place and the day after a party at Pascal's place and we will go out later, siked for that one!

Sunday will be a day of rest I guess...

Thijs = still Thijs

Everybody seems to have an opinion about me since I started drinking and got drunk once, fuck it.
I still know that normally I am very happy with a nice glass of Coca Cola but in some occasions drink a glass of liquor, and New Years Eve it was a little too much.
On the other hand nothing changed, still no smoking, harddrugs or other kind of narcotics, and definatly no Meat...fuck meat eating!

FUCKING JAN SMEETS

I HATE FUCKING PINKPOP, worst festival ever! 3 years ago Morrissey played at the Pinkpop festival so I had to go that year, and this year Bruce Springsteen is playing Pinkpop so I have to go again.

FUCK 2 Pinkpops in 3 years! Hopefully never again!

Today

Woke up early to do some cleaning and figured out 2 people sent me a text mssg if I was going out yesterday night, sorry folks I was already asleep.

Yesterday was a fucking boring day, downloaded some ten foot pole, propagandhi and strike anywhere stuff, so the next couple of days I will be listening punkrock.

A couple of days ago I was reading "Metro" this free newspaper which had this letter which shortly said: meat is tasty and I don't care if an animal suffered before it's slaughtered and appears on my plate. Well off course I knew that this guy was provoking and was waiting for a reaction, well he got it, i sendt in a letter in reply to his enormously stupid article.

Well what about this day, have to go to work in 2 hours and tonight I'm gonna hang around with some friends, will be okay I guess. Hope today is over fast, feel kinda alone today...dunno...

The Fly, Bruce Springsteen and White Lies

Last couple of days have been pretty boring. Had a sort of presentation at school yesterday and came home around 22.00h and watched some news and the "Pauw en Witteman" programm.

The "Pauw en Witteman" programm dealt with the conflict around Palestina and Israel. It's weird and disturbing to see how the Dutch citizens and politicians seem to be on the hand of a terroristparty like Hamas who are using his citizens as a human shield and seem to have started this part of this everlasting war.

After the programm I started to watch David Cronenbergs "the Fly" from 1986, how much I love that movie (from when I was a child) I fell asleep after half an hour.

Today I woke up with a terrible headache and had in mind to go out tonight but I guess staying home tonight would be better for me now, this saturday there is a houseparty (as in a party at a house hehe) in Wageningen so let's take a good sleep in advance hehe.

Last couple of days I listened to the new Bruce Springsteen record for some time, don't know, I really like it but something is missing somewhere, maybe I have to listen to it some more.

Another record I have been checking out since 2 days is the new White Lies album, a new Brittish band I saw at the Lowlands festival in the vein of The Sound and Echo & the Bunnymen, they should become huge I guess, their first album is pretty good...check it out!

Here some short videos I filmed at the Lowlands festival from White Lies:

the last few days...

Have been a blast!

last thursday Kim stayed over for some movies and a sleepover which was awesome! We watched "El Orfanato" (for the second time) and "City of the Lost Children".
I knew the first one was great but "City of the Lost Children" kinda sucked a little anyway...great day!

Last friday I was a total wreck from staying up too late and I had to work at 16.00h which kinda sucked, but I managed to get through that day.

Saturday I had to work at 7.00 and had to ride my bike through a temperature from 13 degrees (celcius) below so it was COLD as fuck! After work I celebrated my birthday for all of my friends in Horst, it was a cool party with lots of bad jokes, farts and gayporn of tv, had a blast of a time.

My most awesome presents were definatly the Vic Chessnutt record (thanks Bro) and the My Bloody Valentine record (thanx wouter!), so up towards my party here in Utrecht ;)

Sunday i chilled and drank some tequila with Toni Crack and a friend of him, watched some "futurama" and laughed our ass of!

About the playlist de last couple of days...I totally am getting into the "Living with War" record by Neil Young.
I was allways into his "after the goldrush", "harvest" and "everybody knows this is nowhere" records but the last couple of days I tried some of his later work and this record totally kicks ass!

The "Living with War" record is this very anti-war and political album dealing with war, consuming (in the west) and the election in the us, the lyrics are totally making sense!

About the Music, It sounds like Neil Young in his Crazy Horse period with some friends forming a choir in the back, just check it out!

donderdag 8 januari 2009

...

I'm still thinking about this news a got last saturday...

This guy was always coming by to drink some coffee at my work (gasstation) and we always chatted about all kind of things.

Well this saturday I called this guy who repairs bikes to get my bike fixed and he immediatly asked me who I was and figured out I worked at the gasstation and knew Jac (this guy I referred to).
Jac was a guy who was single, had a whiplash through a car accident and was involved (through that car accident) in a long running trial, which costed him a lot of energy. He was obviously not happy with his life.
Well anyway the guy who repairs bikes told me Jac has hung himself the tuesday before new years eve. I didn't know
how to react, it's so weird when someone takes his life when you know that person of just know who it is.

The whole story when and how he hung himself was told me in all the details and that story is still haunting my head.

2 releases by some of my favourite artists have leaked!

The new Morrissey album leaked a little while ago, needless to say how siked I am for this release. The 2 new tracks on his greatest hits album last year were pretty cool so I was siked to here some new material. First the coverart leaked and I was pretty stoked about that one, Fred Perry clothes are cool, but that tattoo...I don't know...

I listened to it for 2 times since yesterday but I can't say that this is gonna be my favourite Morrissey album, I dissapointed me a little, the first track of the album is pretty ugly...maybe I should give it some more time...

The other album that leaked was the new Antony and the Johnsons album, Antony is (together with Tindersticks) one of the few artist that can make me cry just by listening to it, his last record "I am a Bird Now" was one of the most honest and moving records for the last 5 years I guess, listening to the opening track: "Hope there's someone" is simply brilliant and should be on the funeral list for every person.

But fuck now about the new record, it's more dramatic and less soulful that the last record, I have to listen to it a little more, but first impressions are very positive. I listened to it this morning for 2 times and it goes on high rotation this week for sure!

It's a Malfunction

Here I am sitting at work, a little bored and waiting on some things to do.
The last couple of days I am living this restless life, too many things run around in my head, too much emotions are entering and leaving my body at the same time...restless like I said.

In the afternoon I watched this movie with Jim Carey I got from a friend of mine called: "the number 23", it kinda sucked but hey, it was a movie by directer Schumacher so I kinda knew it had to suck because most of his movies do...

Tonight after work I'll be heading home, play some pro evolution soccer with a flatmate, no thinking and hopefully some rest...

ow best news of the day: Beirut will play Paradiso in May...last time I saw him play there was amazing! check out this beautiful song by mister Zack Condon:

hope to get some rest after this thursday, maybe everything falls into it's place after then

We've got mistaken for strangers by our own friends...

What a fucking day! I missed my train because the bus was late (fucking snow), so I had to take 1 train later. When the train arrived in HELLmond it stood still for like 25 minutes because this guy in a wheelchair couldn't get out of the train by himself and the people from the railway took it's time...fuck! After that the train drove very slow because the computers couldn't see if the places were the road crosses the railway were closed so the machinist had to be aware so he could us the brakes in time...and I had to be at school to deliver my portfolio in time...FUCK!

After 14h Toni Crack and Nick came to Utrecht to smoke some pot and buy some shoes, GOOD TIMES!

I listened to The National all day...check out the following video I filmed myself and check their amazing album called: Boxer!

GUITAR HEROES #3: Bob Mould

I remember the first time I heard from the band Husker Du, it was when I bought a Satanic Surfers cd were the Guitarplayer wore a shirt from that band, years later I heard from Husker Du again when Therapy? released their amazing Husker Du cover: "Diane".

Several years ago that name came again to mind and I started checking out Husker Du's discography and I must say that I am a larger fan of their more melodic stuff (Zen Arcade, Metal Circus, Eight Miles High and my favourite New Day Rising)than their previous hardcore stuff.

This thing that makes Husker Du such an amazing band is the way Bob Mould's guitar sounds, it sounds so hard and vague, you can directly hear that it's a Husker Du song.

Bob Mould later on started this band called Sugar, I never really checked that one out (I should I guess), that's work for later on...

02-01-09: The first day after my birthday

Damn I woke up way too early but fuck it! I started up my macbook and started typing this new entry in my blog while I am listening to the "Revolver" record by the Beatles.

I allways been more of a Rolling Stones fan since my early years, I almost got forcefed my love for the Rolling Stones by my dad who is a huge fan. But today it's a day for some Beatles records hehe.

While here I am sitting in front of my computer with a terrible ache in my stomach which I have since last week, it goes away from time to time but everytime it gets to me again...fucking hell!

Today is the day I celebrate my birthday for my family, like always a very boring day with the usual chit-chat about work, school and girlfriends, we'll I get over it.

Tomorrow I have to work till 22 h and after that I go to this party from a friend of mine with 2 of my best friends, will be very strange drinking again with my sxe buddie Wouter next to me, but Wouter, I'll behave hahaha.

I just have to get my shit together and make up for a 1 and a half hour travel towards my parents...

You Put Your Arms Around Me..

In about a week I am gonna see this girl which I like so much for the last couple of weeks, fucking siked!

Well last months I am so much getting into Jens Lekman, a Swedish artist you love or hate, sometimes very sweet and cheesy but in overall very moving, I really love his way of songwriting using simple everyday things as a metafor for beautifull subjects.

I missed out Jens 2 times on a tour here in Holland but I hope he'll get back soon, and I surely won't miss it this time...

well till next thursday I will be in a romantic mood I guess with a lot of Jens through my speakers!

I was slicing up an avocado
When you came up behind me
With your silent brand new sneakers
Your reflection I did not see

It was the hottest day in august
And we were heading for the sea
For a second my mind started drifted

You put your arms around me
You put your arms around me

Blood spraying on the kitchen sink
"What's this?" I have time to think
I see the tip of my index finger
My mind is slowly creating a link

From your mouth speaks your lovely voice
The softest words ever spoken
"What's broken can always be fixed
What's fixed will always be broken"

You put your arms around me
You put your arms around me
You put your arms around me
You put your arms around

I must have past out on the porch
Dreamt I was carried in a kangaroo's pouch
When I wake up I'm in the waiting room
On a dirty hospital couch

My hand iswrapped in toilet paper
And my body is wrapped in debris
You're sitting next to me reading the paper
I put your arm around me
